Be Prepared
Hurricane Season is approaching and we want you to always be prepared.  Here are some useful tips to help you with your preparations:

Family Disaster Plan

  • Discuss the type of hazards that could affect your family.
  • Know your home's vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind.
  • Locate a safe room or the safest areas in your home for each hurricane hazard. In certain circumstances the safest areas may not be your home but within your community.
  • Determine escape routes from your home and places to meet.
  • Have an out-of-state friend as a family contact, so all your family members have a single point of contact.
  • Make a plan now for what to do with your pets if you need to evacuate. Post emergency telephone numbers by your phones and make sure your children know how and when to call 911.
  • Check your insurance coverage - flood damage is not usually covered by homeowners insurance - National Flood Insurance Program
  • Stock non-perishable emergency supplies and a Disaster Supply Kit.
  • Use a NOAA weather radio. Remember to replace its battery every 6 months, as you do with your smoke detectors.
  • Ask your local emergency management office about the possibility and history of hurricanes in your area.
  • While you're there, learn more about your area's hurricane and other emergency plans. Establish warning and evacuation procedures for your building.
  • Avoid elevators.
  • Have disaster supplies on hand, including:
    • Flashlight and extra batteries
    • Battery-operated radio and extra batteries
    • First aid kit and manual
    • Emergency food and water
  • The worst storms can cause hurricane window damage. To protect your windows:
    • Permanent shutters are the best protection.
    • A lower-cost approach is to put up plywood panels. Use 1/2 inch plywood - marine plywood is best - cut to fit each window. Remember to mark which board fits which window.
  • If power is lost, turn off major equipment to reduce a power "surge" when electricity is restored.
  • Keep back-up systems in mind, including:
    • Portable pumps to bail water.
    • Generators or other alternative power sources.
    • Battery-powered emergency lighting.

  • Protect
  • Beautify

We believe it is important to protect your property ...
Therefore, DCMS will invest the necessary time, energy and technology to optimize your investment!
